WHAT’S THAT BIRD?
A Shorebird Identification Workshop
Identifying shorebirds can be challenging, especially for beginners. Many species appear similar, and their plumage changes with age, season, and wear. This workshop provides practical skills and confidence in identifying migratory shorebirds through both classroom and field experience.
This initiative is organised by the Shorebirds Peninsular Malaysia Project (SPMP) and is supported by the World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) Small Grant 2026 under the East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP). In line with this year’s WMBD slogan,“Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!”, highlighting the important role of community (citizen) science in the conservation of migratory birds.Migratory shorebirds are facing rapid population declines due to habitat loss and human disturbance. Strengthening public knowledge and appreciation is essential to support their conservation and the protection of critical stopover sites.
Speaker: Dave Bakewell
Dave Bakewell, a friend and advisor of SPMP, is a UK-born lecturer based in Miri, Sarawak, and a lifelong birder with a particular interest in shorebirds.
